As it is known social media and physical boundaries are two incompatible terms. Today we are going to introduce you a lady, who also overcame a lot of borders in order to arrive at New York, where she is working as an Adjunct Professor and Social Media Strategist. Let us present you Maria Elena Botei.

She was born in Romania, where finished her bachelor and master degrees in Psychology and Psychotherapy in one of the best universities in the country Babes-Bolyai. In January 2007, not long after finishing her master degree, Maria immigrated to USA, where she participated to the Professional Training in Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy at Albert Ellis Institute from New York, and after few years she became an Associate Fellow to the AEI Institute. In addition, she started a job as Adjunct Professor and Consultant for International Programs in Psychology at Bloomfield College, New Jersey. Since 2011, she is Adjunct Professor & Social Media Strategist at the world-wide known Manhattan Institute of Management – private higher learning institution, with long history, offering a high quality, global business education and giving its students the opportunity to take an insight of the successful business on Wall Street, New York and anywhere else in the world.

Where is the cross point between social media and psychology? What are the secrets to efficient usage of social networks? Answer to these and other questions, we will receive from the amazing Maria Elena Botei, directly from the homeland of Facebook – USA.

1. As the time passes social media is becoming more and more popular, but what does it mean to be a Social Media Strategist?

For me to be a Social Media Strategist is to be there for people and for owners who have small business, to help them to get the best results using social media platforms like Facebook Business Page, Google Plus Business Page, Pinterest, Twitter, Mobile website etc.

2. Where is the cross point between social media and psychology?

If you love and understand people or you want to make people to know you, who you are, your brand, then Social Media is the best place to be, to communicate and teach people. My background in psychology helps me to understand and to do things better. However, my experience in Media and Advertising helps me to do the marketing and PR part in an efficient way.

3. You are teaching Social Media Management at Manhattan Institute of Management – how it differs from any other educational institution, which is that thing that makes it a special place for its students?

Students who are studying at Manhattan Institute of Management gets huge knowledge and experience during the internship in the Wall Street business world. The M.I.M.’s staff and professors are competent and unique people.

4. As long as you are an Adjunct Professor Social Media Management it is interesting how do you use social media to communicate with your students, if you do?

I am communicating with my students via my Facebook Business Page, Google+ Business Page and Twitter, and also via my personal Facebook account. I am still in contact with students who studied in 2011 or 2012 at MIM. Every semester we have few students who get jobs as Social Media Manager at companies from their country.

5. What is the most important thing you are teaching to your students at MIM?

To be authentic when they build their personal / professional brand using all the social media platforms what they learned in my classes (Social Media Management and Advanced Social Media Management).

6. Is there any difference between the ways USA and Europe use social media, and according to you what the reason is for that?

My personal opinion is that people who are living in USA are more open minded regarding Social Media and they have been using from the beginning.

7. What are your impressions for Romania and how do you assess its development in social media area?

Romanian people already use some of social media platforms, especially Facebook Business Pages. I have big hopes for them.

8. Twitter or Facebook – which is better for business purposes?

I think that both are good for business, which one is good for one aspect, and together can help the business to spread their message in the world.

9. Recently it became clear that LinkedIn is the fastest developing social network. What is your vision about social networks’ future?

LinkedIn is becoming more trusting social media platform because there are people who still are afraid to be open in posting personal things about themselves in the other social media platforms, and because the goals of LinkedIn are networking and finding a good job, it gets more credibility. It seems like Pinterest is the second social media platform used by business people, after Facebook.

My vision about social media networks’ future is that they are going to be used by all business people in the world and not only by them, because people will realize that in social media platforms we are all linked together.

10. What would you recommend to Bulgarian PR and Marketing experts? What should they be aware of when using social media?

I am pretty sure that Bulgarian PR and Marketing experts know what they are doing in Social Media platforms. My only recommendation is to be open minded and make people understand the real goal of social media in business world, because it is a powerful tool.

Thank you for this interview. I am grateful to be asked questions about Social Media. I gave you short and simple answers because I believe that it is more useful to try it and experience it, not just to listen to other people what they say.
